Field Day: Selecting Your Best Cover Crop – August 25, 2015

The Benton-Tama Nutrient Reduction Project will host a cover crop field day at Rodgers Park in Vinton from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. The event will answer a variety of questions about how to get started with cover crops.

Field Days: Bioreactors & Corn and Soybean Test Plot – August 26th, 2015

On the afternoon of Wednesday, August 26th there will be two free  local  field days, one after the other, and only two miles apart.  The Bioreactor Field Day will begin at 2PM at the Tom Manson field along Crane Creek (Hwy 63 and 160th Street-south of the quarry.) Afterwards, just follow 2 miles north on Hwy 63 to the large Bremer Corn and Soybean Test Plot.

Bioreactor Field Day:  (topics from guest speakers)

  • Learn how they work to intercept nitrates from tile lines before entering our streams, and in subsoil water management
  • What were the summer’s laboratory results on this unit’s efficiency
  • What are activities in the Upper Cedar watershed
  • How do we use the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy on our farms and acreages (and urban areas)

 Corn and Soybean Test Plot Event (after the first event)

  • How are the many varieties performing on side by side comparisons
  • Visit with area reps and walk the field….sharing ideas with your neighbors/friends
  • Evening meal and program
  • Learn more about factors affecting you and the grain industry

Prairie on Farms Fall Workshops – September 15 OR September 17

The second seminar in the series of Prairie on Farms demonstration workshops has been announced: Tuesday, September 15th at the Randy Luze  Farm (Dysart) or Thursday, September 17th at the ISU Research & Demonstration Farm-Borlaug Center (Nashua).  Both events are scheduled from 9-1.

Iowa Environmental Council Annual Conference, “Elevate – Creating an Environment of Action” – October 2, 2015

Registration for IEC’s 2015 Annual Conference, Elevate: Creating an environment of action, Friday, October 2 at Drake University in Des Moines, is now open. This year’s conference, which also marks the Council’s 20th anniversary, will empower and equip attendees to elevate their work, and will feature keynote speaker Chad Pregracke, 2013 CNN Hero of the Year, founder and president of Living Lands and Waters.
